GUY L. WARREN
“I wanted to paint an evocative scene of the sea calm between two tropical cyclones.”

The painting Calm Within the Storm explores stillness held in tension with impending chaos. It reflects a psychological and emotional state as much as a physical one, suggesting the human capacity to find quiet and clarity within uncertainty. This large-scale oil painting presents a photorealistic view of the Vatu-i-Ra Passage, or Bligh Water, between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu in Fiji, as seen from sea. The scene captures a literal interlude between two tropical cyclones—one passed, another imminent. The ocean’s surface appears composed, yet carries a palpable tension, an uneasy calm charged with gathering energy. The work’s extended creation parallels this suspended moment. Begun before the Covid-19 pandemic and set aside during a period of disruption and lost momentum, it was only recently completed. Its resolution became both a personal reckoning and emergence from a prolonged storm.
