LITTLE WATER BEAR

“Underwater listening exposes sonic detail not perceptible above the surface. TALWEG demonstrates how altered listening positions can expand perception and challenge habitual modes of hearing.”

The soundscape TALWEG examines sound at the threshold between water and land. The work draws on the deep listening practice developed by composer and sound artist Pauline Oliveros, which emphasises sustained attention to sound, place, and the conditions of listening.

The title TALWEG is taken from the name of the property where Hand Bent Banana Gallery is located and where the recordings for this work were made. The installation is composed entirely from field recordings gathered at the Hand Bent Banana Gallery site, including underwater hydrophone recordings. Environmental sound, spatial acoustics, and the human voice function as primary materials, where field recordings are transformed into rhythmic and tonal elements, positioning the site as an active contributor to the composition.

TALWEG invites listeners to spend time listening at the threshold between water and land and to notice how attention can shift what they hear.
